Golf Equipment - Driving or Duffing

By Chris Campbell

Hold on, keep the wallet in your pants big boy. We've got some explaining to do first. Basic golf equipment of some kind is a must for anyone looking to take up this ancient game. Golf equipment like a good set of golf clubs, comfortable golf shoes, and a roomy but practical golf bag are essential to start your golfing adventure. But don't go overboard here. Your just learning the game after all, and while good golf equipment is essential, there's no point in blowing a whole wad before you really decide how much you like the game of golf and vice a versa. And as with many sports, the ultra high tech, high performance golf equipment won't really make a big difference to the beginner or for that matter average golfer. After a few years, once you've achieved brilliance on the course, and are beginning to pass the average to above average skill level, then it's time to consider the more advanced golf equipment.

Hitting The Clubs

Your clubs are probably the first piece of golf equipment to consider for an upgrade, once your on the verge of challenging Tiger for the crown. You could decide to replace the entire set of clubs, if money is no object, and your appetite for golf domination has no bounds. But there is another option to consider. There are probably many golf clubs in your bag, that havent seen the light of day, or the green of a course since the last time you paid for drinks on the nineteenth hole. So, maybe you should just consider gradually replacing the clubs you really use with new high performance clubs. The next few times you go golfing, dont just keep track of the strokes on each hole. Take an extra golf score card, and just track of the golf clubs you use for each hole. A little more work, but after a few weeks, you should have a pretty good idea of which golf clubs you use the most, and which are just coming along for the ride. You may want to make up your own little custom golf club score card just for this exercise.

These Shoes Were Made For Swinging

Comfort is of course a major consideration when choosing golf shoes. Youre going to be traipsing across eighteen fairways (or more), and you dont need to be doing that in blisters. A good grip and solid support are also important in picking out golf shoes. As with many sports, a good base (your feet) can make all the difference in the world. Proper foot positioning, and support, are essentially the beginnings of a great golf swing. The pros, or staff at a good golf equipment store can be helpful in choosing a pair of golf shoes that are appropriate for you. Dont be afraid to spend in this category, as it is practically impossible to blow the bank on a pair of shoes, and your feet will love you for it.

Golf Goes Bizzare

Alright, Im sure youve seen all the contraptions, and medieval like torture devices in the infomercials guarantying to take strokes off your golf game. Well, like I said in the first paragraph, put away the wallet big boy. Instead find your self a good golf pro instead. Im sure every golf course you frequent has a pro of a least dubious stature. Ask around a bit, and see if any of your other buddies had good success with a pro. Setup some regular lessons, and put in the practice time. Thats the best sure fire way to improve your game. And then, once your golf game has ascended stratospheric levels, maybe you can justify buying those ultra super fantastic new clubs youve been drooling over all season.

Tracking Golf Handicap With Computer Software

By: qpolash

If youre a professional golfer, youve probably got a well-documented handicap. Everyones interested in your ability so everyone is keeping track. But for golfers who are something less than pros, your handicap may be a tedious piece of paperwork. Why not turn to technology to help?

There are several software and Internet programs available that will help you come up with your numerical handicap, and even help you track your scores to establish your handicap for tournaments.

You have options in these programs that range from online sources to purchased software packages. Prices also vary significantly and you can spend as little as $10-$12, or more than $100. Remember that if you choose an online source to check the websites privacy policy and never offer up personally identifying information that could result in identity theft.

The extent of the programs varies as much as the price. You can find programs that do all the calculations for you, offering up a spreadsheet with all your stats, or choose a simpler program that merely gives you a numerical handicap.

Whatever you choose, keep in mind that your program and your figures is still only as good as your record-keeping practices. If youre one of those people who cant seem to find time for mundane tasks, you may find that youre not also not able to get all the stats entered to track your handicap. On the other hand, having a computer program for the golf handicap tracking may be just the motivation you need to keep better records.

One advantage of an online service over software is that you can stop and enter the information from any computer with Internet access. That means that you can get it done at the office right after you return from a lunch golf game, or even from the clubhouse right after you leave the course. You can also print out your records from any location.

There are many benefits to establishing and tracking your handicap. While the casual golfer may have little need of a regularly updated handicap, theres no doubt that tracking your handicap can often be the incentive needed to improve your game. While making better shots on the course is a good sign that your game is improving, theres nothing like a solid number to prove the fact.

Remember that the results of software programs may not be widely accepted. Before you spend the money for software and expend the time and energy to track and document your golf handicap, check with any tournaments you play to participate in. Ask if they accept any software programs and check into the rules of documentation.

If youre looking for tournament entrance, you should check the USGAs handicap rules. Youll find several online sources for obtaining your handicap, along with how to document those figures for tournament play.

Whether its simply to improve your own game or to document your way into tournament play, its important to get reliable numbers that truly represent your handicap. Otherwise, you may think youre making definite strides when you arent, or eve that youre not advancing your game when it really is.

If you cant seem to find the time to spend at the driving range and your backyard is too small to practice your golf swing, all hope is not lost thanks to virtual golf. Of course, this is not quite as satisfying as feeling the club strike the ball, but it may be a good solution between trips to the course. As the name suggests, you place a ball on the tee just like you would otherwise, but the ball will not travel outside a certain area. Or, you can opt for a net in which you can hit the ball except you will, obviously, have to hit the net each and every time.

Sorenstam takes 3-shot lead into final round

Sat, 10 May 2008 23:21:03 GMT
Rarely spectacular but remarkable for her consistency, Annika Sorenstam shot her third consecutive nearly mistake-free round Saturday, and her 2-under 69 signaled that she may be ready to give Lorena Ochoa a run for No. 1 again.

The eight-time player of the year, plagued by injuries in a winless 2007, gave Ochoa and Jeong Jang up-close evidence that the maddeningly steady game that made her the top female player in the world for so long is coming back, and probably sooner rather than later.

Otto leads by four at Italian Open

The South African had 11 birdies and two bogeys in the third round at Castello di Tolcinasco Golf and Country Club. He is at 22-under 194.

"I played very well today, very well indeed and I am very pleased," Otto said. "I put the ball close to the pins with my irons today and gave myself a lot of chances.

More Golf Stance Tips

By: Robert Partain

Many newer golfers (and a few older ones, too) have a tendency to misalign themselves when they take their stance. Normally, what they will do is aim way right of the target and they do this for a reason. Players who are misaligned from the get go and aim right are usually players who try to swing with their arms. When they do this the ball will almost always take off to the left. So what they are doing with this "right side" target trick is trying to fix a problem before it even happens!

In theory, this shouldn't be a problem...but this is not theory, it's golf. When an "arm swinger" forces his ball back on the fairway by overcompensating his alignment, he thinks he's doing himself a favor. But on those occasions when he actually makes a good, solid full body swing, his ball zips off into the trees on the right or into a right side bunker and he gets mad, and what's worse is that by using this misaligning method he's never going to reach his full potential as a golfer.

These players need to work on the basics of their swing, using their body as a whole and not just their arms. But they also need to know what their alignment is.

So how can you (or anyone else for that matter) see what your alignment is to the target?

Well, here's a simple and very effective tip to determine what your target alignment really is.

Take a stance (your usual stance), aim at a target that you would hit at, and then lay a club down on the ground from toe to toe. Now step back about 8 or 10 paces behind the ball and club that you laid down and sight down the club. Sighting down this club will reveal your alignment.

If the club is a bit left of the target, then you're fine. But if it's to the right of the target, you are out of alingment. Simple but effective.

If you discover that you are out of alignment (that the club on the ground is pointing to the right of the target) then you need to work on squaring up your stance.

Being square to the target is one of the most important tips in golf. Every ball you hit will be effected by this stance--either in a good way or (if you're in a misaligned stance) a bad way. It really is that simple.

Now when you are certain that you are in a square stance, hit a few balls. If the ball goes way left of the target, you know you are pulling it by trying to use too much of your arms. If the ball goes way right, you know you are allowing your body to slide too much through impact.

By being in a square stance and evaluating a few practice shots, you can determine a lot about your swing and those areas that you need to work on.

Level Legs
The lack of traction in bunkers forces the legs to function differently than they do on full shotsthey must maintain their flex during the entire swing instead of posting up through impact. This will keep you nice and level through the shot.

Passersby
Although they might look somewhat similar, the mechanics of hitting a bunker shot are different than those used to play a chip shot from grass. In the sand, it's actually advantageous to allow the clubhead to pass your hands past impact. This move encourages a higher, softer shot by increasing the clubhead speed and amount of spin that can be created. Due to the unstable nature of sand, think of these shots as more handsy than most others in golf.
